How to Store Almond Oil — Shelf Life & Freshness Guide
Share
Unrefined oils don't last forever, and storing them wrong shortens their life further. Here's how to actually store almond oil, and how to tell when it's past its best.
How Long Does Cold Pressed Almond Oil Actually Last?
Properly stored, unopened Cold Pressed almond oil generally lasts 18–24 months from the date of pressing. Once opened, exposure to air gradually speeds up oxidation, so it's best used within 8–12 months of first opening for maximum freshness — even if the outer expiry date is further away.
The Three Things That Degrade Oil Fastest
- Light: UV exposure breaks down Vitamin E and accelerates oxidation. This is exactly why amber glass exists — it blocks the wavelengths that clear glass and plastic let through.
- Heat: Storing oil near a stove, window, or in direct sun speeds up rancidity significantly.
- Air: Every time the bottle opens, a small amount of oxygen gets in. Keeping the cap tightly closed between uses matters more than people realise.
Where to Actually Store It
A cool, dark cupboard or drawer — away from the stove, away from a sunlit windowsill — is ideal. Bathroom cabinets work too, as long as they're not directly above a heat source like a geyser.
Signs Your Almond Oil Has Gone Off
A sharp, sour, or "crayon-like" smell replacing the usual warm nutty aroma is the clearest sign. Colour darkening significantly, or the oil feeling noticeably thicker or stickier than when fresh, are secondary signs worth checking alongside smell.
Should You Refrigerate Almond Oil?
Not necessary for most climates. A cool room-temperature spot away from heat and light is sufficient. Refrigeration can cause the oil to thicken or slightly cloud, which isn't harmful but can make it inconvenient to dispense.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does almond oil expire the same way food does?
It doesn't spoil in a way that's unsafe the way food can, but it does oxidise and lose effectiveness over time — using it well past its best-by date just means reduced benefit, not necessarily harm.
Can I still use almond oil that's slightly past its printed date?
Check smell and colour first — if both seem normal, it's likely still fine; if the smell has turned sharp or sour, it's best to replace it.
Does amber glass really make a measurable difference?
Yes — clear glass and plastic allow UV light through, which measurably speeds up Vitamin E degradation compared to amber glass.
